The City of Buford is located in Gwinnett County, 25 miles north of metro Atlanta, GA, and on the southern shores of Lake Sidney Lanier. It was named after Colonel A.S. Buford, the president of the railroad that ran between Atlanta and Charlotte, NC.
It was originally known as "The Leather City" because of its tanneries. Buford is now home to the Buford Artists Colony where more than 30 artists make and sell their crafts in the quaint shops on Main Street.
Buford has come a long way from its 1872 beginnings. Notable commercial industries are headquartered here. The abundant and skilled labor force and acclaimed school system, along with a large number of major universities and technical schools nearby have attracted many companies to relocate to Buford. Its attention to business and education is shown in its ballooning growth, which has earned Buford the nickname, the "city of many factories." The current population of the town is more than 11,000 residents, and continues to increase with Buford's popularity.
Still, Buford radiates a much sought after hometown community atmosphere. Historic Buford, established in 1872, offers the charm of small-town living along with restaurants, art galleries, shops and historic sites. A growing selection of family-oriented communities is popping up around pedestrian-friendly downtown Buford.
Lake Lanier Islands is recognized as a premier recreational development in the Southeast. Both residents and visitors enjoy camping, fishing, boating and water sports on the lake. Lake Lanier even hosted several 1996 Olympic water sports events!
